Jakarta AI Infrastructure

Indonesia’s digital infrastructure race gained another major development after SM+ Data Centers, Korea Investment Real Asset Management (KIRA), and LG Sinar Mas (LGSM) completed the topping out phase of SMX01 in Jakarta. The facility, designed as an AI-ready data center, targets Ready for Service status in the fourth quarter of 2026. Located in Jakarta’s Central Business District, the project reflects rising enterprise and hyperscale demand across Southeast Asia’s rapidly expanding digital economy. The companies positioned SMX01 as a strategic platform for cloud, AI, and high-density computing workloads entering the Indonesian market.

The project arrives at a time when regional governments and operators continue to compete for AI infrastructure investments. Indonesia has increasingly attracted attention because of its internet growth, enterprise digitization, and expanding cloud ecosystem. SMX01 aims to capitalize on that momentum by offering carrier-neutral infrastructure in one of the region’s largest economies. Earlier, SM+ Data Centers signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) to secure future connectivity access before commercial operations begin.

SM+ Data Centers Expands Beyond Edge Deployments

SM+ Data Centers already operates an extensive footprint across Indonesia through its distributed edge infrastructure network. The company currently manages 25 data centers nationwide with nearly 40 MW of combined IT load capacity. However, SMX01 represents a shift toward larger-scale AI and hyperscale infrastructure deployments capable of supporting next-generation compute demand. The development also reinforces Jakarta’s role as a critical interconnection hub for Southeast Asia’s cloud expansion.

“SMX01 represents an important step in SM+ Data Centers’ journey to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure ecosystem. Building on the edge data center network we have developed across the country, SMX01 will serve as a flagship facility designed to support enterprise, hyperscale, cloud, and AI workloads at the center of Indonesia’s digital economy. With this topping-off milestone, we are one step closer to delivering a facility that is ready to meet customer needs as it enters the Ready for Service phase,” said Herson Suindah, President Director and Group CEO of SM+ Holdings.

Following the topping out ceremony, the project now enters the next phase of infrastructure readiness. Teams will focus on installing supporting systems, preparing data halls, and conducting testing and commissioning activities ahead of operational launch. These phases will determine whether the facility can meet the performance and reliability standards required for AI-intensive workloads and enterprise-scale deployments. Consequently, execution during the commissioning stage will carry major significance for customer onboarding timelines in 2026.

KIRA and LGSM Strengthen Regional Infrastructure Investment Strategy

KIRA’s participation highlights growing institutional interest in Southeast Asia’s digital infrastructure sector. The asset management firm reported assets under management exceeding US$5 billion as of December 2024, signaling the scale of capital now moving into AI and cloud infrastructure markets. Investors increasingly view carrier-neutral data centers as long-term infrastructure assets tied to enterprise digitization and sovereign AI ambitions. SMX01 fits directly into that broader investment narrative emerging across Asia-Pacific markets.

“The topping-off of SMX01 marks an important milestone in the development of a strategic digital infrastructure asset in Indonesia. As an investment partner, KIRA sees SMX01 as having strong long-term fundamentals to support the growing need for secure, reliable, and globally standardized data center capacity. We are proud to support this project together with SM+ Data Centers and LG Sinar Mas,” said Yong Sik Kim, CEO of KIRA.

LGSM Targets AI-Ready Expansion

LG Sinar Mas, the joint venture between LG CNS and SM+, also framed the project as proof of Indonesia’s readiness for next-generation infrastructure deployment. The partnership combines local market access with South Korean expertise in IT services and data center operations. That alignment becomes increasingly important as operators race to build facilities capable of supporting accelerated AI adoption, dense compute clusters, and evolving cloud architectures. Meanwhile, regional enterprises continue searching for infrastructure providers that can scale securely across multiple digital workloads.

Donghyup Han, CEO of LG Sinar Mas said, “For LG Sinar Mas, the topping-off of SMX01 is not merely a construction milestone, but a validation of our ability to deliver design, build, and operate capabilities for next-generation data centers in Indonesia. From the outset, SMX01 has been designed to address increasingly complex requirements, from cloud adoption and data-intensive workloads to AI infrastructure readiness. This milestone brings us closer to Ready for Service in Q4 2026, while reinforcing our commitment to supporting Indonesia’s digital economy with secure, scalable, and global-standard infrastructure.”

Indonesia’s AI Infrastructure Ambitions Continue Accelerating

SMX01’s progress reflects a broader regional trend where AI infrastructure demand increasingly shapes data center investment priorities. Operators no longer compete only on colocation capacity or connectivity density. They now compete on AI readiness, power scalability, operational resilience, and hyperscale adaptability. For Indonesia, projects like SMX01 could help position Jakarta as a stronger digital infrastructure destination within Southeast Asia’s intensifying AI economy.
