Recurrent Energy, the solar and energy storage platform owned by Canadian Solar, has formally inaugurated its 420 MW Rey Solar project in southern Spain, marking a major addition to the country’s renewable energy infrastructure. Located in Carmona in the province of Seville, the photovoltaic facility entered commercial operation in December 2025 and now ranks among the most significant solar developments in the region. The project arrives as Spain accelerates efforts to expand renewable generation capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based electricity sources. Rey Solar adds substantial scale to those ambitions while reinforcing the growing role of utility-scale solar assets across Europe.

The inauguration ceremony brought together government officials, industry executives, project partners, and local stakeholders to celebrate the project’s official launch. Among the attendees were Jorge Paradela, Acting Regional Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines of the Junta de Andalucía; Juan Ávila, Mayor of Carmona; and Dr. Ismael Guerrero, CEO of Recurrent Energy. Their presence underscored the strategic importance of large-scale renewable investments to both regional economic development and national decarbonization objectives. Rey Solar Adds More Than 420 MW of Renewable Capacity

The Rey Solar facility carries an installed capacity exceeding 420 MWp, positioning it as a significant contributor to Spain’s renewable energy generation portfolio. According to Recurrent Energy, the plant is expected to generate approximately 916,000 MWh of electricity annually. That output is sufficient to meet the power needs of more than 275,000 households, providing a meaningful source of clean energy for the national grid. The environmental impact of the project extends beyond power generation. Recurrent Energy estimates the facility will prevent roughly 184,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year by replacing electricity that might otherwise come from conventional generation sources. The emissions reduction is comparable to removing around 25,000 combustion-engine vehicles from roads annually.
