HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is turning its engine business into a bigger play for the U.S. data center economy. The shipbuilding affiliate of HD Hyundai has signed a $673.8 million contract with U.S. energy infrastructure developer Corban Energy Group to supply power generation systems built around its 9.6-megawatt HiMSEN engines. The agreement covers 1,000 MW of combined generation capacity and will support data centers operated by a major U.S. technology company. The size of the order signals how quickly dedicated generation is becoming part of the infrastructure equation for large-scale computing.

HD Hyundai Lands Its Biggest Engine Order

The contract represents the largest power generation engine order in HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ history. It also expands a relationship with Corban Energy Group, which supplies gas, LNG and power products to infrastructure projects spanning data centers and Department of War projects. The agreement puts HD Hyundai Heavy Industries deeper into a U.S. market where developers increasingly need power solutions that can operate alongside constrained utility infrastructure. For the company, the deal creates a much larger foothold in an infrastructure segment where generation capacity can determine how quickly new computing facilities move from plans to operation.

The order follows another major data center-related agreement that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed in April. That $425 million deal with U.S.-based energy infrastructure developer AEG covers power generation equipment for data centers. Taken together, the two contracts show the company building momentum across a U.S. market where data center developers are looking beyond traditional grid connections to secure dependable electricity. The strategy also places engine-based generation closer to the center of the data center development conversation.

Why 9.6-MW Engines Matter For AI Infrastructure

The HiMSEN engines at the heart of the Corban agreement belong to the medium-speed, high-capacity class of power generation equipment. Their 9.6-MW output gives developers a modular generation building block that can contribute substantial capacity without relying on a single massive generating unit. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries says the engines combine high power-generation efficiency with reliability and can support continuous 24/7 operation. That operating profile matters for data centers because AI workloads do not fit neatly into conventional assumptions about intermittent or flexible electricity demand.

The significance extends beyond the engine itself. Large AI facilities can require power at a scale that puts new pressure on transmission capacity, interconnection queues and local generation resources. A generation system capable of delivering power continuously can give developers another tool when conventional grid expansion cannot match project timelines. Data center power is therefore becoming an engineering and commercial problem that stretches well beyond the server hall.

HD Hyundai Builds A Broader Data Center Strategy

The company’s data center ambitions extend beyond power generation engines. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the group’s intermediary holding company for the shipbuilding business, is developing technologies for floating data centers. HD Hyundai Electric is expanding its role in power distribution and electrical equipment, while HD Hyundai Marine Solution is building its position around power generation engine maintenance services. The broader portfolio gives HD Hyundai multiple entry points into the physical infrastructure supporting AI and cloud computing.

That portfolio approach could become increasingly valuable as data center projects grow more complex. Power generation, electrical distribution, maintenance and alternative facility designs are converging around the same customer problem: how to build computing capacity when conventional infrastructure cannot scale quickly enough. HD Hyundai can address different layers of that problem through separate affiliates while keeping the wider group positioned around digital infrastructure growth. The company’s move into data centers therefore looks less like a one-off engine sale and more like an attempt to establish an industrial platform around the sector.

HD Hyundai Sees Recognition For HiMSEN Technology

The company says customer interest is already pointing to broader demand for its power generation technology. “The steady stream of collaboration inquiries we are receiving in the data center power generation engine market demonstrates the market recognition of the HiMSEN engine’s technological capabilities and reliability,” an HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official said. “We will continue to explore diverse business opportunities and strengthen our presence in the power generation equipment market.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. data center market continues to push infrastructure suppliers toward larger and more specialized power solutions. The 1,000-MW Corban agreement gives HD Hyundai Heavy Industries its largest engine order to date and places its HiMSEN platform inside a sector being reshaped by AI demand. The bigger story is not simply the number of engines involved, but the growing willingness of data center developers to treat generation capacity as a core part of the computing architecture. As AI infrastructure expands, companies that can solve the electricity problem alongside the compute problem may capture an increasingly important share of the market.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly.
